Why wait for Thanksgiving to be thankful?

November 16, 2017

Thanksgiving is humorously sandwiched between two of the most stress-inducing situations, the busiest travel day of the year and (dun, dun, dun…) Black Friday. Due to this irony, it is easy to take this special time for granted and have it be over with before you know it.

Since we are one week away from the kick off of the ‘holiday season’ there is no time like the present to take a moment to think of what it is you are thankful for. Thanksgiving really is a special time to be thankful for families, amazing friends, or a helpful community but you don’t need to wait another seven days to celebrate them. Try taking the next week to show your thanks and appreciation in which ever way you choose. You can donate to a local animal shelter, drop off can goods at a church food pantry, do little things to show your partner, parents or even strangers they are appreciated or simply stop and take a moment to reflect on all the good of the past year.

Now, not everyone relies on this holiday to be reminded to be thankful, but it certainly highlights it, hopefully putting all the good in your life in prospective. Since Turkey Day and the days surrounding can sometimes be stressful why not show your gratitude now?

Below is a list of local food donation sites along the seacoast as well as a how-to on being thankful which has some good ideas:

The seacoast of Maine: not all salt air and lobster!

November 7, 2017

When you think of vacationing in the southern coast of Maine you probably have visions of long walks along sandy beaches, exquisite shopping and of course, all things lobster! These visions are accurate. We have everything in Ogunquit and our neighboring towns to satisfy the beach bum, shopaholic and seafood connoisseur inside us all. But what we also have is an abundance of nature preserves and hiking trails that make you forget you chose to vacation in one of the prettiest coastlines in the country.

One of the coolest things about my job has been learning about several nature reserves full of trails and wildlife to explore all within a short drive of the InnSeason Resort. One of them being the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge in Wells. It is a hidden gem that leaves its visitors in awe every time we visit. A well groomed, one mile trail inside the forest and along the marshes, the Rachel Carson Trail offers spectacular views of the meandering salt water Branch Brook and Merriland River, vistas of the Atlantic and dynamic Hemlock forest. The scenery changes each week and our guests have enjoyed watching the colorful foliage peep, peak and now fall over the last few weeks.

Even further removed from the “beach life” this area is so well known and respected for is beautiful Mt. Agamenticus. Again, a short drive from our resort “Mt. A” as it is more commonly, and easily, remembered is a guest favorite for those who partake. Mt. A offers over 40 miles of trails, mainly easy to moderate, as well as an access road to the top in case you opt for ease! On a clear day you can see the White Mountains of New Hampshire including Mt. Washington (the largest mountain in the northeast and home to the “world’s worst recorded weather” as well as our glimmering Atlantic ocean and our sandy beaches. You can make out famed Nubble Lighthouse in York as well as Kennebunkport from the top. It is a glorious juxtaposition: mountains vs ocean!

These are just two examples of some not-so-beachy activities that are open for exploration in our lovely, little “beach” area. Make sure you put these activities on your to-do list next time you visit.
