The Marginal Way Beckons You

September 8, 2009

marginalThe Marginal Way beckons you to follow its path. You enter, meander, stroll, sit, stop and wonder at the beauty. How could you ever leave? It is where you return to first whenever you visit beautiful Ogunquit.

Seeing the crashing water, the rocks, the tiny beachlets, the brightness of the sun and smelling the expanse of ocean makes summer creep back into your being. The beach, in the distance, embraces all varieties of people, umbrellas, kids and sand structures. Lifetimes of summers past return to form the sights, smells, sounds and touches of memory. And no matter how many times you return, it is never the same.

The path spawns traffic all day through. In the early morning it is sleepy parents with strollers, toddlers, joggers and power walkers. Mid-morning finds men and women of all ages enjoying a taste of heaven. Later on, families on vacation and teenagers- some interested in where they are and others not. Young adults and young couples come and go throughout the lazy afternoon hours. Later in the evening, those going to dinner or strolling populate the route. Whatever the time of day, watching the people mesmerized by this wonderful strip of land makes you smile.

In the early fall, when the mornings are crisp, the clear cold air welcomes you and only an occasional other walker is nearby. You stop at certain points to take mental notes for daydreaming use in the winter, and you can hardly wait for next summer so you can return ……

Sailing in Ogunquit

July 20, 2009

silverliningThe Silverlining

The Silverlining is a 42ft. Sparkman and Stephens designed fractional rigged sloop built entirely of wood in 1939 by the well-respected Maine boat builder Henry Hinckley. It was especially designed to sail well in the typically light airs of the New England summer. She carries 888 sq. ft. of sail with working jib and main alone on a single 63 ft. spruce spar.
The morning cruise, 9:30 to 11:00 is the quietest sail. Generally speaking, the sea is calmest and the winds lightest.
The two 2 hour cruises thru the middle of the day offer the maximum sun exposure as well as optimum wind conditions.
The 4:30 departure is a great way to finish a day on the Maine coast: An hour and a half of fresh air before your lobster dinner.
The last trip takes you till the sun goes down. It’s a beautiful time to be on the water.
Each trip is limited to six passengers. Conditions at sea will be very much like being at the beach, but a little more extreme; windier, sunnier or cooler, whatever the day. Dress accordingly. You should wear soft-soled shoes or go barefoot. Bring a sweatshirt, sunscreen, sunglasses, and don’t forget your camera.
You may bring a light lunch, something to drink and a modest amount of alcohol. They have blankets on board if you’re cold. Call 207-646-9800 for reservations Prices range from 33.00 to 38.00 per person.
Join them and experience the sensation of time spent at sea. Let the Silverlining be the backdrop for a lasting memory of your visit to Ogunquit!
